HANDBAG AUCTION:
Sandal Community Association’s first handbag auction on Friday (Oct 14)
raised more than £400 for Wakefield Sea Cadets, two of whose members
were present. Monica Graham gave a brief talk about the cadets’ proposed
new building. The auctioneer was Ian Flint.
SANDAL LIBRARY: With
doubts about the future of local libraries throughout the district, the
Community Association has written to Wakefield Council urging the
retention of Sandal library because of its value to the Sandal,
Portobello, Belle Vue and Agbrigg area. The association has asked to be
consulted before any final decision is taken about its future. We now
learn that the Library at Sandal is to become a 'HUB' Library. Further
details to follow.
SANDAL STROLLERS:The
Strollers had another great walk around the parkland at Wentworth
Castle, Barnsley, on Thursday, December 1. Highlights of the walk
included deer watching and exploring the historic monuments trail.
Seventeen walkers enjoyed a follow-up lunch at the Long Barn visitor
centre. The group is currently working on a new programme of monthly
walks for 2012. Further information will be available in the New Year.
MEMBERSHIP:
Sandal Community Association’s membership year runs from September
through to August of the following year. Any members who do not renew
their membership by December will find that their membership has lapsed.

HANGING BASKETS: Now
that there will be no money available from the Community Chest, Sandal
Community Association has decided not to fund hanging baskets next year.
The committee agreed at its meeting on Wednesday (August 24) that the
issue would be reviewed should other funding or significant sponsorship
become available in the future. Contact SCA
chair
Gail Stephenson.

SWITCHED-ON: The lights on
the Barnsley Road Christmas tree were officially switched on by Sandal
Endowed School student Kelsey Greening on Friday. The social which
followed at the school – with Santa, mincepies and hot drinks – was
organised by Sandal Community Association, who have donated the tree
lights. The school’s choir,
formed only in September, gave its first public performance to warm
applause. A tinsel tombola was run in aid of Association funds. Chair
Gail Stephenson thanked all those who helped make the occasion such an
outstanding success saying. “The huge measure of support shows just what
a popular event this has become in the Sandal calendar.”
